Attic Maintenance and Winterization

When it comes to preparing your home for the winter months, it is important to make sure your attic is is included on the list of things to do. Whether you use your attic for storage or as a maintenance room of the house, it’s important to make sure you’re prepared for the cold months.

Your attic is generally located at the top of the home, directly underneath the roof, and it is important to ensure that there are no leaks coming through or around the base of the roof. This could include any water damage that may have occurred from previous inclement weather (sign of this are discoloration, pooling water, growing mold, etc.). If any leaks are discovered, make sure that you get them fixed as soon as possible and check for any signs of mold or pests that could have built up from the leak. Pertaining to leaks, it’s important to make sure that all holes leading from outside to inside are sealed shut or properly screened. This includes electrical lines, sealed windows (if there are any in your attic), and ensuring that your attic is insulated to help trap heat. Attics have some form of ventilation, whether it is a fan or vent. These tips are also beneficial if you have eave storage instead of an attic.

Keeping your attic insulated is also key when preparing for the colder months of the year. Heat rises, and it’s crucial to keep the heat trapped inside your home. With the heat trapped, it will be easier to keep the temperature levels steady. With insulation, unfortunately, may come furry animals that are unwanted and unwelcome in your home. Animals will chew through wood and/or insulation and make themselves right at home. Check for damaged insulation or chewed wood for these furry creatures, and get them exterminated as soon as possible. There are loose (small chunks of fiber) and roll (fibers that are woven together to create a continuous blanket of material with a moisture barrier) insulations. It is important that no matter what kind of insulation you choose, you must inspect it to see if it needs replacement. Regardless, it is important to prepare a finished or unfinished attic (whichever you may have) for the winter months.
